Cold weather has become almost synonymous with rich comfort foods, creamy hot chocolate and all around less-than-ideal foods. But healthy, nutrient packed choices can be just as satisfying — and make you feel better, too. So before you reach for that second helping of marshmallows to top off your cocoa, consider whipping up one of these tasty treats instead!

Orange Pomegranate Cooler

Enjoy your morning OJ without the sugar crash. Try the DIY approach: pair a few fresh squeezed oranges with fresh pomegranate seeds for one powerful (and delicious!) antioxidant boosted beverage.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh pomegranate seeds
  • 3 oranges, whole
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 cup of ice

Directions:

Peel oranges and discard the rind. Add all ingredients to blender. Pulse at a low setting to incorporate ingredients then blend on medium until smooth.

Cranberry Walnut Whip
Rich in vitamin C and low in calories, cranberries promote a healthy immune system and add a palate pleasing tartness to any recipe! For this seasonal smoothie, we threw in protein-packed walnuts and sweet red apples for a hint of savory sweetness.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cranberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 generous handful of walnuts
  • 1/2 cup of vanilla yogurt (or coconut milk yogurt to make it vegan)
  • 1/2 cup of sliced red apples
  • 1/2 cup of ice
  • 1 pinch of ground cinnamon

Directions:

Slice apple with skin in tact and discard the core. Add all ingredients to blender. Pulse at a low setting to incorporate ingredients then blend on medium until smooth.

KaleNana Bliss
Packed with beta carotene, vitamin C and a plethora of other nutrients, kale is a smoothie’s best friend. Add a banana into the mix and you’re in for one sweet ride to energy town!

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole banana, peeled
  • 1 cup of kale (frozen or fresh)
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • 1/2 cup of vanilla yogurt (or coconut milk yogurt to make it vegan)
  • 1/2 cup of ice

Directions:

Cut orange in half and squeeze juice into the blender; discard the rind. Add all ingredients to blender. Pulse at a low setting to incorporate ingredients then blend on medium until smooth.

Citrus Green Machine
Leafy greens and citrus fruits go together like peas and carrots…but in this recipe, the pairing is much sweeter. Add a dash of turmeric to his antioxidant rich blend to stave off colds and fight inflammation!

Ingredients:

  • 2 handfuls of kale or spinach (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 orange (juiced)
  • 1 lemon (juiced)
  • 1 whole banana, peeled (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup of almond or coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup of vanilla yogurt (or coconut milk yogurt to make it vegan)
  • 1 generous pinch of turmeric

Directions:

Cut orange and lemon in half and squeeze juice into the blender; discard the rind. Add all ingredients to blender. Pulse at a low setting to incorporate ingredients then blend on medium until smooth. Top with extra turmeric for color.
